The Theory
What (theoretical) concepts are fundamental to the ambitions to realise more democratic, inclusive and resilient smart cities? The Future (co-creative session #1)
What strengths, needs, concerns and (shared) values characterise the neighbourhood (Afrikaanderwijk Rotterdam)? What future developments might affect the neighbourhood? Which opportunities, needs and concerns may arise in the neighbourhood? The Concept/Design (co-creative session #2)
What Concepts/Designs could be conceived that would capitalise on the developments and opportunities that were identified and that would meet the strengths, needs and (shared) values that were pinpointed? The Plan (co-creative session #3a)
What could Concepts/Designs look like? How could they be realised? What related instances/examples/experiments can be found elsewhere? Who should be involved? How would data and digital technologies play a role in them? How would governance be organised? The Experts (co-creative session #3b)
What suggestions, comments, concerns and critiques do experts bring to the table? The Pamphlets (co-creative session #3c)
What is essential to the scenarios/imaginaries? What is on top of participants' minds? The Analysis
How could we engage stakeholders in imagining and developing a more democratic, inclusive and resilient smart city/Afrikaanderwijk?
A Data Empowerment Design Studio uses future and design-driven action research to explore how citizens and other relevant stakeholders could appropriate more structural decision-making and governing power concerning smart city developments. Together with citizens, local entrepreneurs, artists and community workers of the Afrikaanderwijk Cooperation in Rotterdam, researchers of the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for BOLD Cities explored, with the help of Pantopicon, how they could create multiple local economic, social and ecological value, and what technologies and governance models would be beneficial to realise these alternative future imaginaries.
